Province: Edirne

Known as Hadrianopol in ancient times, the city and province of Edirne mark the far west of European Turkey. While Edirne was once home to the ancient Thracian, Greek, and Roman civilizations, not much has remained. Instead, Edirne’s greatest treasures come from the Ottoman period when it was capital of the empire and many of the greatest architectural achievements of the empire were built overlooking the green hills and rivers of Thrace. Edirne is also home to an annual oil wrestling festival, the oldest wrestling festival in the world!
