Hasankeyf
/ By Josh
The city of Hasankeyf has stood for millennia on the Roman-Persian frontier but will soon be lost.
Unlike the superhero, the delightfully named southeastern province of Batman doesn’t feature in any blockbusters. In fact, it barely makes it into any guidebooks about Turkey. While Batman is an agrarian and industrial province built primarily on the money that oil reserves brought in the 1940’s, it is also home to a number of beautiful natural as well as historical sites. From the Neolithic period onward Batman sat in an extremely desirable territory that was fought over and protected for thousands of years, leaving behind the ruins of empires and kingdoms long past. Chief among these historical sites is the magnificent and threatened ancient city of Hasankeyf, slated to be lost to the waters of a massive dam project sometime in the near future.
